For therapists, grief counselors and referring clinicians
You don’t have to believe in it.
A client tells you they are seeing a medium, or asks whether they should. You may have no view on whether mediumship is real. You still have a professional judgment to make about the practitioner, and that judgment can be made on what is observable.
If you’re going to refer someone, know what good practice looks like.
These encounters are dual-edged. They can support a continuing bond with the person who died, and a minority of people describe distress after a reading that missed.
That finding is why this resource exists. The same encounter can help or harm, and what separates them is observable. See the research behind every claim.
We’re not here to tell you what to believe. We’re here to help you know what to look for.
The framework
Five dimensions of observable practice
- Communication, Not PerformanceWhether the session centers on the person who died, or on the person delivering the message.
- Less Asking, More TellingWho is actually supplying the information over the course of the session.
- Evidential QualityWhether the detail offered could apply to almost anyone, or to one particular person.
- AutonomyWhether the recipient leaves more capable of their own judgment, or more dependent on someone else's.
- Respect & EthicsWhether the practitioner distinguishes what they know from what they believe, and stays inside their role.
The principle
Who is supplying the information?
What holds up
- Medium provides
- Recipient recognizes
The information arrives first. The recipient's job is to recognize it or not.
What only looks like it holds up
- Medium asks
- Recipient provides
- Medium elaborates
The recipient supplies the substance, then hears it returned with detail attached.
False signals
What can mislead us
Each of these is routinely read as evidence of ability. None of them is. They are signals about presentation, commerce and reach.
Atmosphere
The setting does the persuading
Candles, low light, ritual objects and a hush in the room. Staging shapes how a message lands, and none of it originates with the communicator.
Certainty
Confidence read as accuracy
An unwavering delivery feels like knowledge. It is a manner of speaking, and it is available to anyone regardless of what they can actually do.
Television
A broadcast credit
Programs are commissioned for watchability. Editing selects the hits, and the criteria that got someone on screen are not evidential ones.
Publishing
A book on the subject
Publishing demonstrates that someone can write and that a publisher saw a market. Neither is a finding about their practice.
Price
A high fee
Price signals demand, positioning and confidence. It carries no information about the quality of what happens in the session.
Scarcity
A long waiting list
Waiting lists can reflect genuine demand, limited availability, or deliberate scarcity. The three are indistinguishable from outside.
Following
A large audience
Follower counts measure reach. Visibility proves visibility, and the skills that build an audience are not the skills being assessed here.
Testimony
Glowing accounts from others
Testimonials are selected by the person publishing them, and a bereaved person's account is shaped by what the session meant to them.
The removal question
Remove the image, the title, the décor and the presentation. How strong is the communication that's left?
Try one dimension
The scorecard, in miniature
This is the first of the five dimensions. Nothing is pre-selected, nothing is scored numerically, and nothing you enter here is sent anywhere or carried over to the full instrument.
Recorded
Nothing recorded yet.
This is one of five dimensions. The full scorecard weighs them together, and a serious concern on any single dimension is never offset by strength elsewhere.

The relationship, stated plainly
Before You Refer was initiated and is funded by VerySoul, a Public Benefit Company working in this field. That is a conflict of interest worth knowing about before you weigh anything else on this site.
No practitioner pays to appear here. There is no directory, no register and no rating. The framework does not steer referrals toward VerySoul, and it is designed so you could apply it to VerySoul as readily as to anyone else.
